Andrew Bruce

Andrew Bruce (Director of Music)

Andrew studied Music at Middlesex University completing his MA there in 2003. In 2008, he was awarded an Honorary ARSCM for his services to Church Music particularly in recognition of his work on Royal School of Church Music courses.

 

Andrew says, 'I am proud of what we have here at Bishop's Stortford College. Facilities are excellent and there is plenty of encouragement and help for pupils to perform good music to a high standard'. In Andrew's spare time he directs the Harlow Symphony Orchestra and is in demand as a bass soloist for concerts in the local area and in London.

   

Helen Sheehan (Assistant Director of Music)
Helen taught music in Ireland for many years. She has conducted several amateur and youth orchestras, including the Cork Symphony Orchestra and the Galway Youth Orchestra, who received several national awards under her direction. She also directed the National Children’s Choir and an adult choir, who have been very successful in competition and in televised performances.

 

Before joining the Bishop's Stortford College staff, she worked in the arts sector as a publicist and administrator, most recently with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Helen Sheehan
   
Iago Iago Núñez (Subject Teacher)
Iago was born in Ribeira, Spain, and developed his studies in Santiago and Madrid before moving to London where he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. There he obtained a Baccalaureate of Music, a Postgraduate Diploma and a Master of Music whilst studying with the prestigious professors Peter Bithell and Caroline Palmer.

He has participated in a series of chamber music recitals in Stockholm, Upsala and Skeleftea (Sweden), and in Citá Sant’Angelo (Italy) in addition to solo recitals in London and Spain. He has taken part in the Britten Festival and Debussy Festival, organised by the Guildhall School.
   
Also in the Messiaen festival and Mark Anthony Turnage Festival organised by the BBC at the Barbican Centre. Iago has devised several concerts dedicated to South American music at the Canning House and St James’ Piccadilly. He was the winner of the VI Ciclo de Jóvenes Intérpretes in Spain and has recently performed with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra in A Coruña.
   

Belinda Aitken
Belinda studied Music at Kingston University and went on to train as a Specialist Secondary School Music Teacher. She was Head of Music at Surrey School, before moving to Bishop’s Stortford and becoming Head of Music at a local school.

 

Throughout this time, she has also taught the piano. Belinda currently teaches class music to Pre-Prep Year 2, Shell and Form 1 and runs the Shell/Form 1 choir. She also teaches piano lessons, both at School and privately.

James Gough James Gough (Musician in Residence)
James graduated with a Master of Arts in Organ Performance from the Royal Academy of Music in 2009, where he studied interpretation with Nicolas Kynaston, and improvisation with Lionel Rogg and Matthew Martin. During his time at the Academy, James gained the Fellowship Diploma of the Royal College of Organists, as well as the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music teaching diploma. He was also the recipient of several Academy prizes including the Eric Thiman Organ Prize for solo organ. James has taken part in numerous masterclasses with internationally acclaimed organists Olivier Latry, Daniel Roth, Bine Bryndorf, Piet Kee, James O'Donnell, Patrick Russill and David Titterington, amongst others.
   

He was chosen to play the organ for Elton John's visit to the Academy and has also taken part in numerous performances abroad with the organ department including South Germany, Sweden, Denmark and France.

During this period. James was also organ scholar at St Bride's Church Fleet Street where he performed regularly with the professional choir and music team for services and concerts. As a solo recitalist, James has played in many of the UK's most presigious churches and cathedrals including Westminster Cathedral, The Temple Church, St Bride's, various Oxford chapels, Worcester, Bristol, and Coventry Cathedrals and Bath Abbey, and numerous others. He has also given a number of world premiere performances by renowned composers including David Bednall and Diana Burrell, with the latter as part of London's Spitalfields Festival.
