Harry Potter illustrator visits the College

Over seventy College Junior School pupils were introduced to new ways of seeing by professional illustrator, Cliff Wright who is best known for producing two of the Harry Potter front covers. Accompanied by professional sculptor, Kathryn Jordan, Mr Wright spent two days with the nine and ten year olds.

On the first day the children were challenged to draw sea life objects by looking only at the objects, not their drawings in order to fine tune the all important looking skills rather than relying on memory. The second day saw them drawing lobsters and modelling them in clay without the objects in front of them. After comparing their creation with the real thing, they then made another model, this time with the lobster in front of them.

Liam Burgoinge said that he had never concentrated so hard on anything in his whole life and Annabelle Bruce said that it was like the clay had taken over her whole mind!

A hugely successful workshop during which the budding artists amazed themselves with what they could achieve whilst Cliff Wright declared himself very impressed with the pupils and would like to return next year!

Cliff Wright has over 17 years experience as a children’s illustrator. In addition to his Harry Potter work, Cliff has also produced many successful children’s book titles - inspired by his love of animals and the countryside - as well as high profile work for advertising and design clients.
