Building Links with Local Businesses

Election talk was set-aside for two hours on Thursday 5th May to focus on building bridges between education and the world of work at a special evening reception held by the College for the business community. The twenty guests, including Valda Edmunds from BAA, John Gearing, Chairman of the Bishop’s Stortford Chamber of Commerce, Jayne Lee, manager of the town’s Tourist Information Centre and William Wells of Mullucks, Wells & Associates, were given an update on past, present and future developments at the independent school including a pioneering project involving the use of high-powered IT technology normally only found in industry.

Guests had the chance to see many of the changes at the college for themselves as pupils took them around the campus highlighting the expanded facilities, boarding accommodation and the fact that there are now as many girls as boys since the transition to full co-education began eight years ago.

“I was delighted with the interest shown in what we are doing here at Bishop's Stortford College and the enthusiasm for exploring ways of working together,” said Headmaster, John Trotman. “We are very keen to foster stronger links with local companies, not least because we want to give our pupils the very best skills and foundation to thrive as young women and men in the workplace. Bishop’s Stortford is a good place to live and work and as one of the major employers, with over 240 staff, we want to play our part in promoting the area.”

John Gearing, Chairman of the Bishop’s Stortford Chamber of Commerce, said “I was extremely impressed with the way the College has expanded in recent years and the improved facilities that are now available to students. It is heartening to see that the College is embracing the Business and Residential community with these facilities which have to be for the benefit of the Town and its environs and is most welcome especially at this time of change.”
