College Junior School U11 girls’ hockey team, having won the Southern regional round, came second in the finals of the National Prep Schools Tournament. The College team made a good start in driving rain by beating Holme Grange from Wokingham 3-1, before keeping Colstons from Bristol to a goalless draw. They then found themselves facing current national champions, Millfield School from Somerset, one of the most renowned sporting schools in the country. Rising to the challenge, the girls played their hearts out to achieve a 2-0 victory, with both goals being scored by Francesca Pettengell.
Two 1-1 draws against Fairfield school from Leicestershire and Berkhampstead from Cheltenham put the Stortford team at the top of their group. The semi-final against The Elms from Herefordshire proved to be another nail-biting game which was goalless at the end of full time, leading to a sudden death golden goal scenario. The girls caught the opposition on the break, and Georgia Solomon slotted home the winning goal to send the team into a final against Chafyn Grove from Salisbury. Another tight game, and despite leading for half the game, the Bishop's Stortford College Junior School team eventually lost 2-1, in spite of the heroics of Rebekah Deane in goal. “It was a fantastic achievement for the girls,” said coach Ed Jones. “Although naturally disappointed not to win the national title, they were consoled by the thought of being national runners up as well as regional champions.”
