The College was privileged to host a truly splendid recital given by three Old Stortfordians
on Monday 21st May. James Edwards, Alexander Grove and Jonathan Beatty were all pupils at the College in the 1990's and are rising to the top of the musical profession. All three were cathedral choristers before coming to the College and whilst at school were shining lights in the music department. As tenor singers, James and Alex are currently in demand throughout Europe and Jonathan was recently awarded the prizes for the
best accompanist at the Kathleen Ferrier and English Singers' and
Speakers' Competitions. The evening’s programme included songs by Schubert, R Strauss, Rachmaninov Vaughan Williams and others, and I have to say I felt very proud of these three young stars in what they have achieved.
The charity concert was given in aid of the College's Malawi project which will see twelve Sixth Formers travelling to the poverty stricken country in July to work closely with teachers and pupils in two schools. The expedition team will provide vital educational resource and equipment, train staff in new teaching methods for physical education and help repair and decorate the school classrooms to create a more attractive and enjoyable learning environment.

The concert, which raised £650, provided a wonderful opportunity for the present crop of musicians at the College to hear what can be achieved through talent and hard work. The audience was clearly thrilled with the high standard of music making, and the three performers were equally delighted to be back in their old surroundings. It was a thoroughly memorable event which was rounded off by a reception in the Ferguson Building.
