Newham Day

Sunday June 11th 2006, for some it was an action-packed day of games and activities, for others it was simply a chance to relax in peaceful surroundings on what, for many, would be their only day out of London all year long. Around 100 people from Newham thoroughly enjoyed the annual family day out at the College. Our visitors represented many different nationalities - Nigerian, Ghanaian, Zambian, Iranian, Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Malaysian, Sierra Leonean, Scots, Dutch, Jamaican, American - as well as English. The idea for the outing was first sown when Community Service Co-ordinator, Tara Wright, attended an Open Day of the Newham Group of United Reformed Churches, with whom the College has strong links. She overheard one of the church leaders expressing a wish for members of the community to have a day out in the country. The Newham Day has proved a very popular event, with pupils, staff and parents helping to ensure its success for the guests. One appreciative visitor was heard to comment, “We have been loved today by Bishop's Stortford College.”
