On Thursday 25th November, Bishop’s Stortford College Junior School took part in the St Columba Prep School U9 Rugby Tournament for the first time and were delighted to emerge the winners.
Of the ten schools participating, Bishop’s Stortford College had two victories, one draw and 1 defeat in their group games to qualify for the semi-finals.
The semi-final against Bedford Prep School was an excellent encounter between two evenly matched sides with both teams showing fantastic spirit. At full time the scores were tied 10-10, with
tries from Edward Goodman and Ross Durrant, and excellent defence from Jake O’Keefe. But the most nerve racking 6 minutes for the team lay ahead; extra time was to decide who would advance to the final. Bedford Prep scored and lead 15 – 10 but with minutes to go James Thacker caught a pass round by his angles and dived over the line to level the scores. The sides couldn’t be separated and the rule book stated that in this scenario a toss of a coin would decide the finalists. It was a tense moment but what ever the outcome, the team had done its very best. Luck was with Bishop's Stortford College and the toss of the coin resulted in the Junior school squad advancing to the finals.
The final against Donhead School epitomised Bishop's Stortford College’s performances throughout the day, with the determination of the players showing through to win the game with just seconds remaining. Ross Durant broke through a tackle and ran the length of the pitch to crown Bishop's Stortford College as champions.
