1st XV win first tournament of the new season

The College First XV squad made a promising start to the 2007 season winning the Framlingham College Rugby tournament on Saturday 8th September. Although some players had taken part in the pre-season training, the majority of the 25-player squad had only practiced together for one session. The tournament demanded that the players would have to play 5 twenty-minute matches during the day: a real test of skill and fitness! The College were also faced with the prospect of some strong opponents from host school Framlingham College, Royal Hospital School, Campion School and two teams from the West Suffolk College, a rugby academy feeding clubs such as Cambridge, Bedford and Northampton.

For the record, the College played 5 matches, won 3, lost 1 and drew 1, scoring 52 points and conceding only 10. However, in true dramatic style, the tournament was only decided in the very last seconds of the final match played between the College and Campion School. The Essex school had just returned from an unbeaten tour to Canada and were a well-organised and powerful team. Thanks to some excellent tackling and fine rucking by their forwards, the College put Campion under a lot of pressure. With three minutes to go, however, a series of forceful runs by the large Campion forwards broke the College defence and put the College behind by 7 points to nil. The College response was to run the ball wide at every opportunity. Time ticked away and, following a Campion knock-on, the referee informed everyone that there was time for just one more play. Winning the ball at the scrum, the College attacked down the blind side. Clever inter-passing kept the ball alive and eventually allowed flanker Alex Baxter to use his pace and run in from 50 yards to score under the posts. Harry Gerard's conversion tied the game and gave the College an overall points' victory in the tournament, despite losing an earlier match to the West Suffolk College 'A' XV. The College concluded a fine tournament by being awarded the prize for the best try of the tournament.
